Spotlight on Marketplace Cafes

Posted on May 18, 2010

I recently watched  It’s Complicated, and like many of you immediately fell in love with  the set decoration. The house is amazing, but I really loved the Bakery/Marketplace Meryl Streep’s character owns.  Then I went to Atlanta over the weekend and walked into Star Provisions and I felt like I was on the It’s Complicated set. So I decided to round up my favorite marketplace/cafes. They all have a similar aesthetic-a bit industrial, a bit rustic,  with a modern yet traditional sensibility. There is something about industrial lighting, communal, rustic tables mixed with great chairs and really good food that makes me happy.

Here is The Bakery from It’s Complicated.

The legendary  Joan’s on Third in West Hollywood.

Pierre Lafond in Santa Barbara-Not to Be Missed is the outpost in Montecito with the most charming housewares store Upstairs!

A collection of Moroccan rugs Upstairs at Pierre Lafond.

PS-When in Atlanta I also went to dinner at Abattoir, owned by the same proprietors as Star Provisions. The restaurant has a similar aesthetic to Star Provisions-rustic, lofty, modern and a mix of industrial sleekness and rustic charm.

Abattoir in Atlanta-designed by Dominick Coyne (can’t seem to find much about him-can anyone direct me to more info?)

So any other amazing market place cafes that I don’t know of?? Fill me in…

Le Pain Quotidien in NYC is still my favorite, more french, less industrial, and the long scrubbed tables are so wonderful.

I loved the set design on It’s Complicated and posted about it as soon as I had seen the movie because it inspired me so much! This is a wonderful post and I agree, the industrial design really does feel welcoming, especially in the kitchen.

Le Pain Quotidien is a great one! The one out here on Melrose is pretty great also.

I’ll be out in West Hollywood in a few weeks…can’t wait to give Joan’s on Third a try! I’ll admit City Bakery in New York is one of my favorite…not as beautiful as the one’s you’ve picked here but the pretzel croissant is still to die for.

Star Provisions in Atlanta is one place I never miss when there for market! Have you had dinner at Abattoir? Amazing.
