Spotlight on: Travel Guides

Posted on May 25, 2010

I travel a fair amount and I’m always curious about what to see, where to shop, where to eat, etc. But I have pretty specific taste and I’ve come to rely upon some really great sources that meet my needs as a traveler. I’ve traveled a few places with some of the guides and have newly discovered one or two, so I think you will enjoy these guides as much as I have.

I’ve traveled to Paris, Tel-Aviv, and Istanbul using Louis Vuitton City Guides-they are hands down my favorite. While the guides definitely have a luxury bent, there are things listed for every budget, and the recommendations are pretty spot-on.

I love Luxe City  Guides-not only are they so travel-friendly, but they offer great resources in a tongue-in-cheek way. Furthermore, they now offer Mobile Apps for each guide-the travel guide of the future, for sure.

Night and Day Guides are a smaller company, but incredibly resourceful and of the moment. The Night and Day website is  great resource because it extends beyond what to see and what to do by listing various events taking currently taking place and is constantly being updated.

City Secrets is a newly discovered city guide with an interesting twist-the book offers excerpts from various tastemakers about their favorite resources in their city.  For example, Economy Candy in New York is Dana Levy’s (founder of dailycandy.com) favorite spot in the city. This s a definite must buy for me so excited.

Indagare is first a membership only web-based travel resource and second a quarterly guide sent only to members. The website is  kept so hush-hush that after five minutes of browsing as a non-member, you get booted off the site. Lucky for me, I have a membership login that I can use to access great information about destinations as well as insider’s guides on certain places (i.e-Madeline Weinrib’s Istanbul is a favorite of mine.) The quarterly publications are a fun resource to collect.

Other Sources to Mention:

Wallpaper City Guides-

Note Bene-another membership only service-

Mr and Mrs Smith-a more accessible membership service.

So, now I want to go on vacation! Anywhere sounds good, but after reading Stylish Bird’s post here, Thailand is on my radar!

Dose anyone know of other travel guides I might be interested in? I would love to learn of a new one!

These look great, especially City Secrets. I live in New York but still want to pick it up, and I’m definitely grabbing the London guide for my trip there this summer!

I bought the Paris guide as a treat one day, and I am still reading it. I have discovered many new places to discover on my next trip. Great post!
